The Bible – Marriage

Equal marriage rights have been a huge argument both in the past, and today with gay marriage rights. The first place to pass the right for homosexual marriage was Amsterdam, with the first same-sex marriage being performed on the 1st of April 2001. Other places that have passed laws allowing same sex marriage are:

Belgium – 2003

Spain – 2005

Canada – 2005

South Africa – 2006

Norway – 2008

Sweden – 2009 (The parliamentary vote was a landside with 226 voting yes to same-sex marriage and only 22 voting no)

Portugal – 2010

Iceland – 2010 (One of the only countries with an openly gay head of state. The parliament passed the law with 49 votes voting yes for same-sex marriage and 0 voting no)

Argentina – 2010

The Idea of Marriage in the Bible

Genesis 2:18-24: Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

This means that in the Bible, the idea of marriage is between a man and a woman, and nothing else. This idea however, infringes on the basic human right of equality for all homosexuals, when is about 10% of the population.

Marriage in the Bible – Women must submit to their Husbands in Everything

Ephesians 5:22-24: Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

So now, not only are the rights of 10% of the population disregarded, but around 50% of the population is now considered inferior, all because of the “Good Book”. These laws were enforced up until a few hundred years ago, and some are still enforced today, all in the name of a “loving God”.

Marriage in the Bible – Rape

Deuteronomy 22:28-29:  If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father.  Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

Considering that this verse if quiet self-explanatory I will leave it as food for thought.
